This union's roots go back to the mid 1980s, when several classifications of professionals in the municipal government of Columbus, Ohio were negotiated out of AFSCME (American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees) Local 1632 bargaining unit. Subsequently these classifications were without bargaining rights or representation and classified as "D" for hourly paid workers or "E" for overtime exempt (salary) workers.

     Several years went by, tired of being left behind, we started to organize, to protect ourselves. In 1990 a report by the National Commission of Public Service, reporting on the loss of qualified people in the public service, due to declining pay and job satisfaction, further encouraged the development of the Association. With the realization that several types of professional employees have not had significant cost-of-living wage increases the formation of the Columbus Municipal Association of Government Employees (CMAGE) began.
